Welcome Back! September 5-8

Hello and Welcome!

Thank you all so much for taking time out of your busy schedules to come to Meet and Greets last week or this week. It was wonderful meeting your family and the awesome students I get to have in my class for the year! I am beyond excited for this school year.

I hope you had a fun yet relaxing last week of summer and spend this Labor Day weekend doing something you enjoy!

Reminders/Updates

  • Tuesday, September 5th is the first day of school!
  • You can send a snack with your child. Students can bring a box of snack and when it is out, bring another OR bring an individual snack daily. Either way is fine with me!
    • If you are willing and able to bring a class box of snacks, that would be helpful for those times when someone forgets :)
    • Lunch will not be until 11:30; students will go to recess first, then lunch
  • Below the Curriculum Update is our set 6 Day rotation schedule for the entire year. This is new for everyone this year, so please let me know if you have any questions! It is a tad tricky to understand at first glance, but I think once we all get used to it, it will go smoothly!
    • Mrs. Wolf wanted to share a reminder about returning/checking out library books. Since we will always have Library Checkout on "Day 3," this means that students need to have library books turned in on Day 2.
  • If you haven't yet, sign up for the Remind app to receive texts from me throughout the year. I'll use this to let you know of dress up days, field trip reminders, any last minute things, etc.
    • All you have to do is text "@feldkam" to 81010
  • I will post a blog each week! My blogs will be on the site missfeldkamps.blogspot.com Look for my email to know when I post it each week.
    • Some of you asked whether pictures will be on the blogs. YES, that is my intention!
  • If you're interested in buying NDLC clothing, you can shop at the online store here. The deadline to purchase clothing is September 7th.
  • Agendas will not come in until the second week of school (so I hear). Until then, just know that students are expected to read 20 minutes each day and we will not plan for any other homework for the first week!
  • I might have told some families that students will have a new gym teacher this year...but that is NOT true! They will in fact be having Mrs. Stratton! :)

Upcoming Events

Curriculum Update

Reading: This week we will be doing some in class assessments and setting expectations! We will start our official first day of Reader's Workshop on Thursday! Our first unit will be "Building a Reading Life!"

Writing: This week we will take our on-demand assessment. We will then look at our results to set goals for our first narrative unit. We will begin writing personal narratives (stories) on Thursday!

Math: This week we will work on setting expectations and creating a learning environment. Students will learn that mistakes are how we learn and grow--not just in math but in any subject! We will jump into multiplication next week!

Word Study/Content: For the first week, we will use a lot of this time setting classroom rules, creating a safe environment, and working on our hopes and dreams. These will be goals we hope to accomplish this school year!

2017-2018 Calendar

Each day is mapped out for the entire year. For example, September 5th is D1 or Day 1 of the rotation. The yellow, blue, and pink days are just part of the rotation schedule; what that means for us is that we'll have Guidance (instead of STEAM) during the blue rotations on Day 1.

Specials 6 Day Schedule:

Day 1: Music & STEAM/Guidance
Day 2: Library Skills & Gym  **Library books due Day 2
Day 3: Gym & Library Checkout
Day 4: Art
Day 5: Music & Gym
Day 6: Gym & Music

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns!

Best,
Jenny Feldkamp
